THE QUAKE WAKES THE SOULS
I believe that everyone has
heard about the 7.8 magnitude earthquake of China. Until now, more than
50,000
people have lost their lives. Millions of people have lost their homes.
Three
days of national mourning was observed to honour the quake’s dead
victims. How
serious it is! I, as a Chinese Christian, did ask God why He did allow
such a
horrible disaster to happen. Did you have the same question?
Until now, I don’t know the answer. But I know that there must be something we can learn from the earthquake. I read a lot of news and articles about this earthquake. Many of these true stories really touched my heart. All these things made me think about “if God allowed it to happen, what did he want us to know?”
There is something more important than mourning for the dead. My QQ (internet chat friend) signed off saying that the shaking wakes the souls up, while love makes life meaningful. One of my QQ friends reminded me that we should give the souls peace; not wake the souls up. I told her that “the souls” here refer to those of the living people: not the souls of a deceased person. So suddenly she understood what I meant.
As we know, China’s economy has been developing very fast in recent years. Most people are blindly going after money. People’s thoughts are full of money and making money. And many people feel that life is empty. Demons are everywhere. Most people believe that money is everything; technology is everything; and power is everything. Not many people have the desire to seek God. Nether do many people have the opportunity to know God. However, even today, no country could forecast the earthquake accurately. Neither money nor human power could save people from death. That’s the power of nature. No one can conquer death but God alone.
China’s population will grow to 1.5 billion people. Are 50,000 lives enough to wake 1.5 billion souls up? There is no treasure on the earth that could be with you all the time. Your car, your house, your friends, your parents, your wife/husband. You could lose them all in one day! Just like the people who died in the earthquake. Not only poor people died in the earthquake; the rich people also could not survive. The only treasure that can be with you now and forever more is the relationship with God.
If this earthquake did not happen, would you have considered the purpose and meaning of your lives seriously, as you do now?
Life is great! We should decide what kind of results our lives will have beyond our life in this world. During the three days of national mourning, I was very depressed. I did pray for the earthquake victims everyday. I am glad that I have made the choice that assures a rewarding eternal life while I am still alive.
Give thanks!
