FAITHFULNESS OF GOD
PRESERVED FOR SOME UNFINISHED WORK!
Poh Gek writes:
On 25th May, 2008, my husband Andrew and I were on our way to Sunway Pyramid for Andrew’s night of bowling. I was day dreaming as I often do when I am not driving. As we reached the set of traffic lights after Taman Bahagia LRT station, I felt the car spinning clockwise.
My mind cried, “Accident!” and my spirit and mouth cried,
“Jesus! Jesus! Jesus! …. Oh Jesus!” I closed my eyes and hunched
forward,
simply trusting Jesus and surrendering the outcome to Him. My mind’s
eyes saw
the name of Jesus in big, black capital letters. It seemed to me that
the
accident lasted for as long as I called out to Jesus. When I
realized that the
car had stopped, I opened my eyes and saw that I was suspended on the
safety
belt and Andrew was below me. The car had landed on the driver’s
side! The
wind screen was shattered and pieces of glass were all around
Andrew. I was
pretty alert and calm. After all, I merely closed my eyes,
hunched my back and
called out Jesus’ name. “Are you okay? “ I asked Andrew. He
told me he was
alright and asked me how I was. “Okay!” I replied.
With haste, I unfastened my safety belt and pulled myself up, unlocked the door, and tried to push it upwards so that I could climb up. But it was too heavy for me. Soon, passers-by were already rushing to the scene. We told them to open the passenger’s door and an Indian man helped us. I climbed out quickly, fearing the car might burst into flames. A Chinese man and another man helped me down. Andrew was similarly assisted thereafter. We both escaped literally unscathed with Andrew having only some very tiny bruises on his right elbow.
Immediately, I thanked God for His protection and prayed that no weapon formed against us shall prosper. Soon two Malay ladies (one of them was the driver of the car which knocked ours) came and asked me whether I was alright and whether I wanted to be sent to a clinic. I told them I was fine. The Indian man who opened the door for us, advised me to go for a hot drink and when I said that I did not need one, he offered me his bottle of mineral water. I declined with thanks and as he drove away, I said “God, bless you!” I was feeling very grateful for God’s protection and mercy and wanted to share this blessing. One of the Malay ladies heard our conversation and asked, “Are you a Christian?” I said, ‘Yes. Glory to God!’ She must have wondered which God had protected these lucky people!
The other Malay lady called her parents and they arrived soon after. Initially, her father was aggressive, thinking that we were the ones who knocked his daughter’s car. He soon realized his mistake when the lady admitted her fault. She described how our car had spun and somersaulted! I was still trying to figure out what actually happened. In any case, the parents were amazed that we were unhurt. I told them that it was Jesus who saved us as I cried out to Him. The mother was surprised and showed annoyance with my open praise for Jesus.
God even brought to our midst a mechanic who took note of the details of the accident and later drove us to the police station. When we were discussing the sequence of the accident, only did I realize our car had indeed spun, somersaulted and landed on the driver’s side, facing the direction that we came from. When it was later up-righted, the roof of the car was found badly dented, three wind screens were shattered, the front of the car was also hit due to the somersault and the two sides were damaged as well. Amazingly, our car bore the full brunt of the accident and both of its passengers escaped unhurt.
What was even more amazing was that I did not even feel the violent motion of being tossed about as the car spun and flipped, nor did I hear the loud screeching of metal on the tarmac! All I heard was just background sound and not the harsh reality! It was as if I was cradled as I huddled and called out the name of the Lord. God blocked out most of the sound and effect of the motion from me and somewhat shortened the experience for me! Talk about God’s protection! Indeed, God is faithful to His words:
PSALM 91 v. 1-2
He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High
Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty,
I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress;
My God, in Him I will trust.

PSALM 121
I will lift up my eyes to the hills –
From whence comes my help
My help comes from the Lord,
Who made heaven and earth.
He will not allow your foot to be moved;
He who keeps you will not slumber.
Behold, He who keeps Israel
Shall neither slumber nor sleep.
The Lord is your keeper;
The Lord is your shade at your right hand
The sun shall not strike you by day
Nor the moon by night.
The Lord shall preserve you from all evil;
He shall preserve your soul,
The Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in
From this time forth, and even forevermore.
On the way to the police station, I told the mechanic that Jesus had saved our lives, in Mandarin! While at the police station, I was feeling very thankful and I called up Grace, our cell group leader’s wife, to tell her about the accident, asking her to thank God and pray for further protection. However, she came to the police station with her husband, Alan, to give us their moral support and to see the wrecked car. They fetched us home and watched us eat dinner! Thanks, Grace and Alan!
We did not inform our two children immediately as we were
okay and we
knew they were out for the evening. We did not want them to worry
unnecessarily. When we narrated the event to both of them later, their
reactions were so different! Jen Ling thought it was so exciting and
cool to be
involved in such a high action drama. She also told us that we are now
more
accountable to God! Eugene, on the other hand, was overwhelmed by the
fact that
our lives could have been lost and started to hug and kiss me on the
cheek. I
must confess that I took advantage of the situation and said that he
must tell
us that he loves us, which he did! God be praised!
Andrew Writes:
We were in our Kembara, travelling from SS2 on Jalan
SS4A/1, towards Jalan Majlis on the way to Sunway Pyramid. I noticed
that the
traffic lights were not functioning, so I slowed down, moving at a
speed of
about 40KM/hour following behind the moving line of cars. Suddenly,
from the
right side, a Proton Putra appeared from the direction of Jalan Bahagia
towards
Jalan SS3/39. It knocked into the back portion of the driver’s side of
our car.
Due to the impact of the knock, our car went into a spin. I tried to
control
the steering wheel but to no effect. It spun, skidded and somersaulted!
I could
hear crashing sound like crumbling of iron and shattering of glass. I
knew we
were in great danger as any on-coming vehicle could plough through us,
endangering us as well as others. I could hear Poh Gek praying loudly
“Jesus,
Jesus, Jesus.” At that moment I could sense that I was into ‘flash
prayer’ with
pictures instead of words racing through my mind, seeking God’s
protection for
our lives. No words came out from my mouth but I knew my prayer focus
was for
God to prevent on-coming vehicles from hitting us, and commanding the
car to
stop further spinning or skidding. Next, the car was on its side
because I
could see the tarmac and heard the screeching sound of metal scrapping
against
the surface of the tarmac road. A few seconds seemed like a long while
as I
could see the progression and the sound of the entire accident. The car
came to
a stop but the engine was still running. I managed to switch it off.
Poh Gek
looked at me and asked, “Are you okay?” I said I was alright and in
return asked
her, “Are you okay?” She seemed alright because she looked so calm. I
quickly
told her to try to open her side of the door which was now facing
skyward. She
could not do so as it was too heavy for her. By that time, we saw
people coming
and they helped to open the door and assisted us one by one to escape
through
that door. A few strong guys helped to push and put the car upright
again. Just
imagine! Due to the impact of the spinning and skidding, the car had
now landed
at the opposite side of the traffic light.

The car was badly damaged; shattered windscreens, dented roof and sides. The workshop called the next day, informing me that the entire roof of the car needed to be changed as it was damaged beyond repair.
Without a shadow of doubt, God’s hand was on Poh Gek and me. Perhaps, He has preserved us for some unfinished work that He wants us to do. I thank God for His faithfulness and His mercy which endures forever. His praise shall continuously be in my mouth as long as I live.
