With much joy, Jeremy looked
forward to the mid-term break that was to begin 1 October. To kick off
this
event, he and a few friends planned to spend the last September weekend
at a
farm in Karen (a countryside area about ½ hour from
Nairobi
town). The farm belonged to his best friend Michael’s granddad.
Michael’s grandfather picked up
the 5 boys in his pickup. Michael and Jeremy sat beside the granddad
who drove.
Two other boys sat behind and the last boy out back in the open.
Everybody was
happy and looking forward to a wonderful weekend kicking football,
barbecue,
and all kinds of things boys do when they manage to be rid of their
parents.
The road to the farm was rough,
and just as the grandfather was maneuvering his way through the dusty
road, an
animal ran right in front of the pickup. Michael’s grandfather swerved
in an
instant, but what with the sudden move and the poor condition of the
road, the
pickup unbalanced and flipped over twice, landing on its side! In the
midst of
the tumble, Jeremy’s seat-belt snapped and he was tossed about within
the
vehicle. When the car finally stopped, Jeremy realized he had ended up
in the
back seat and there was blood trickling down his face. He managed to
scramble
out of the side-window. Suddenly, when what occurred hit him, he went
down on
his shaky knees to give thanks that he was
alive!
As everybody began to assess the
damage, they quickly removed themselves from the pickup, afraid that it
might
burst into flames. Nobody was badly hurt, when suddenly they remembered
one
person was missing! The boy who was out behind in the open truck was
thrown out
when the pickup flipped and landed in the middle of the road where
there’s
on-coming cars! They rushed to drag him to the side and realized the
boy was in
such a terrible shock that he was shaking and foaming at the mouth.
With help from other vehicles,
they rushed the boy and the grandfather to the hospital. The rest
stayed behind
for the police and to watch over their belongings in the pickup. When
things
began to get organized, it suddenly occurred to Jeremy that he had just
escaped
with his life! The truck was such a wreck and yet God had kept all of
them
alive. For the second time since he got out of the truck, Jeremy again
went on
shaky knees at the side of the road and started praying. His friends
thought he
had hurt his legs when they kept seeing him go down on his knees!
Afterwards, when they finally got
to the farm, Jeremy kept telling them of God’s wonderful protection.
All the
boys decided they must go to church the next day (Sunday), even though
few are
Christians!
Our whole family gives thanks to
God for He is faithful. Jennifer cried when Jeremy was giving this
testimony in
church the Sunday after the accident.
(Jeremy escaped with a cut in his head and some bruises to
his side,
otherwise, he is well and basking in the attention of all his school
mates
because of the accident.)
